Arnis is markedly different from conventional martial arts such as Gong Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Silat primarily because it immediately introduces its exponents to the use of weapons. In the conventional martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do for example, use of weapons is only introduced once the practitioner has reached a higher level.
The only other system that is similar to Arnis would be the generic combative courses given to different members of the armed forces in various parts of the world for professional soldiers. Thus it can be gleaned that Arnis is not sport-oriented, neither does it have a predilection for the extensive knowledge and practice of forms. Arnis is offensive-minded and is designed as a practical combat system.
